![]() ![]() So thus now that we can hear this music on LP - with all its inherent quirks and innefficiencies - maybe, just maybe, this is the way Rudy might have envisioned this music being played back someday. That is - and I’m purely speculating here, folks - it might stand to reason that the high end of the analog master might be a little brighter to accommodate for inevitable reigning in of frequencies in the disc mastering process. ![]() To my preference for the vinyl presentation of Blue World… I do wonder… given the nature of who recorded this music - the legendary Rudy Van Gelder - and when he did so (in 1964, 20 years pre-digital) whether he mixed this with vinyl pressing ultimately in mind. In general, however, I like the sound of how the music is processed via the download and especially the vinyl better. Ultimately we’re splitting hairs here and both streaming versions are basically fine from my spot checks (I have not yet listened to them fully) but they sound a bit brighter to my ear, perhaps a result of the compression formats used for streaming… I am just guessing here, there could be any number of variables at play. The 192/24 bit download is my second favorite as it sounds a bit more pure. Of the four versions, I think I am leaning toward the vinyl for my preferred playback option for a number of reasons I will go into in a moment. It is available in HiRes up to 192/24 on Qobuz ( click here). You can also now find Blue World streaming on Tidal in 192/24 MQA format ( click here). The dark black medium weight vinyl pressing is quiet, well centered and generally sounding excellent. While this is not a fancy 180- or 200-gram disc, my copy sounds quite nice and I’m not hearing / seeing any of the nasty common 21st Century vinyl pressing problems gracing this issue. The advance 192 kHz, 24-bit download I received certainly sounds very nice and warm and round when played through my Mytek Brooklyn DAC. With lacquers cut by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios and remastering by Kevin Reeves at Universal Mastering all done off the original 1/4-inch analog tapes, the source material for creating this new LP is no doubt excellent (despite it being in Mono, with some inevitable anomalies on the master tapes due to aging). My review copy of the new vinyl edition of Blue World finally arrived and I have to say I’m very pleased. The back story on this is quite interesting and if you haven’t read Part 1 of my review, please click here to jump to it as I explain the album’s genesis. In short, this music recorded for a rarely seen French Canadian film was recently re-discovered and is now being issued for the first time. I also took the eggs out a few times to candle them (checking for development - you need a reasonably bright light and a thick piece of cardboard or similarly opaque substance with a small hole to do this, but it is not a necessary task). Mama duck DOES leave her next, so I was not too worried about having the incubator off for the half hour it took to get it fixed up. I also had to drain the water out and give the incubator a light cleaning mid-incubation because the water became slimy. I put water in the bottom of my incubator to keep the humidity up, and had to replenish it daily. Those eggs expect to have wet feathers on them. Duck eggs have less water content than chicken eggs because mama duck is going to leave the nest at least once a day to grab a bite, poop, and get her feathers wet to moisten her clutch. Sure they look dirty, but that film on them is there to keep out bad stuff. Keep the incubator somewhere with as little draft and as stable a room-temperature as possible so you don't end up with some eggs cooler than others, or have the thermostat tripping needlessly.ĭo NOT wash the eggs! I hope it is not too late to mention that, and you'll probably be fine if you rinsed them in water, but they come out coated for their own protection. I had intentionally small clutches so I put an extra thermometer in with the eggs to ensure the temperature was even. Your incubator is one of those Styrofoam boxes, yes? I've used one these successfully for two different emergency hatchings. I hope we are talking about farem-style ducks and not 'rescued' wild ones - but I think the details are the same. Sorry for the late reply, but I'm just reading this now. ![]() ![]() ![]() The problem is, something that looks overpowered on paper but is actually fine in play isn't something that really happens - or at least, it generally only happens if you have a very specific definition of "actually fine in play" - that being that it's overpowered, but it being overpowered doesn't actually matter. These people are rightfully dismissed with the tone of "well what are you even doing here then?" There's also the occasional person showing up in homebrew forums, getting their work roasted for being horrendously broken, and going "well it's supposed to be really strong". ![]() ![]() When you do that in a homebrew forum in response to people pointing out possible issues with your content, people quickly realize you aren't actually serious about making usable homebrew. Even with the larger amount of playtesting Matt did for the Illrigger, as far as I know he hasn't really released any details on what feedback he got and how he addressed the problems with the original Illrigger - his stance on it is literally just, "we played it and it's fine". That doesn't actually address anyone's criticisms of your work. What you don't do, generally, is tell people "well we played it and it's fine". You explain how other classes get stuff of similar power level, or how it's balanced out by this downside or weakness it gets, or see if your critic is misreading your rules and thinking something works a way you didn't intend. And when someone tells you your homebrew is overpowered and it isn't, you have to actually make a case for that. And the reason for that is that when something looks overpowered, it very often is. I'm someone who spends a lot of time in homebrew groups, and this concept jumped out at me as a sort of red flag when Matt released the Illrigger video. "It looks overpowered on paper, but it's fine in play" Instead, I want to talk about why the class was designed like this and the effects that has on the game. But I'm not here to nitpick every aspect of the class's power level. ![]() I could go on like this all day - you get the point. You could play a straight hexblade, but then you wouldn't get a d10 hit die, or con save proficiency - something a hexblade has to start in sorcerer or take a feat for both things the Illrigger gets for free. Any other class that wants to use charisma for weapon attacks needs to dip hexblade, but the Illrigger gets it without sacrificing any of their progression. Not necessarily in that every feature they get is broken - in fact, I'd say that about very few of their features - but in that the whole of the Illrigger gets a lot more for a lot less effort.Ī paladin, for example, needs to draw on their spellcasting resources if they want to smite - but an architect of ruin can cast spells all day long without cutting into their smite-equivelent (baleful interdict). But what I am here to say is that whether the Illrigger is even remotely balanced depends entirely on the table you play it at, and on how your table sees balance in the first place, because regardless of your opinion of the Illrigger, it was not designed to be in line with the existing 5e classes - and Matt seems to have intended that as a feature, not a bug.Īt a glance, the Illrigger is simply better than the other classes. I'm not here to tell you the Illrigger is ridiculously overpowered and you should never ever use it because it'll break your game. Plenty of people have already done a great job of breaking down and analyzing the Illrigger, and I don't really see a need to do that again, especially since I think cluttering up this post with a dozen paragraphs of it would probably muddy the actual points I want to make. This isn't another "The Illrigger is overpowered" post. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are going to pick one late Bergman film to see, there is no contest – Fanny and Alexander is a masterpiece. I was originally very impressed when considering that this film was released in 1978, given that he was at his peak during the late 50s and early 60s, but then I remember Fanny and Alexander, one of his great works, came out in 1982. If you are familiar with Bergman, it is worth watching, but only after getting through his films from his classic period, such as The Seventh Seal, Winter Light, and Persona. The film rehashes themes he explores better in his other works. Having said that, if you have indeed never seen a Bergman film this isn’t necessarily the best place to start. I’ve found Bergman’s color films to be particularly powerful in certain aspects, and conveying pain is one of them. Ullmann in particular excels in this film – I found my stomach writhing with pity watching her sob angrily at her mother. Eva and Charlotte are aggressive and naked in their confrontation, and is frequently hard to watch. The film is classic Bergman, and if you’ve never seen a Bergman before you may be shocked by its raw emotion. (It is also extremely true, and is something we should all be aware of.) This is an idea that Bergman brought to all of his work and it is certainly true for this movie. Kierkegaard once said that, I’m paraphrasing, only after we have truly broken down all of our borders and revealed ourselves to those around us can we truly love. The film ends with a potential reconciliation on the horizon. After being confronted with the pain of her children, Charlotte has her own opening, and reveals to Eva her own fears and pains. After a tense day together, Eva and Charlotte are left alone, where Eva confronts Charlotte over her failure as a mother, and the damage and pain she has wrought upon her two daughters. After Helena’s condition became bad enough, she was placed in a hospital and effectively abandoned by their mother, and Eva took her in to watch over her. Helena suffers from an extremely disabling muscular disorder (I believe it is cerebral-palsy) and must be under constant supervision. Upon her arrival, Eva surprises her mother by telling her her other daughter, Helena, is there as well. The story is classic Bergman and addresses a theme he based his career off of – our inability to communicate with, and thus connect, with the people closest to us, and the ways we suffer because of it.Įva is visited by her mother Charlotte after an extended absence. Autumn Sonata stars one of his regulars, Liv Ullmann, as Eva, the daughter of a concert pianist, Charlotte, played by first-time collaborator Ingrid Bergman. The film is shot in beautiful color by Bergman’s cinematographer Sven Nykvist, using a palette of autumn colors – oranges, reds, yellows. Ingmar Bergman directed over 60 films during his career, with a group of regulars in most of his later movies. ![]() The mother’s failures are paid for by the daughter.” “The mother’s injuries are handed down to the daughter. ![]() ![]() ![]() Drag and drop the desired files to/from the device to transfer.
